Standards for Success was a project of the Association of American Universities in partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts. There were two goals of the project. The first was to identify what students need to know and be able to do in order to succeed in entry-level university courses. These Knowledge and Skills for University Success standards were released in the report Understanding University Success.

The second goal was to analyze the alignment between state high school assessments and the Knowledge and Skills for University Success standards to improve the connection between the content of high school tests and the standards for university success. This alignment was released in the report Mixed Messages.

The Standards for Success project concluded in 2003. The Knowledge and Skills for University Success standards were endorsed by 28 of the leading research universities in the country and licensed to The College Board. Copies were sent to each of the nearly 20,000 public high schools in the U.S. Knowledge and Skills for University Success is a comprehensive and thoroughly grounded set of standards for college success.
